Seismic Survey Design

Target Finders specialises in the design of seismic surveys in any environment and for any application, ranging from exploration through to reservoir delineation and recovery monitoring. We have designed approximately 30 surveys since 1994 covering all types of onshore terrain, as well as multi-vessel and OBC surveys. Our unique 3D simulation software enables us to quickly and accurately predict the quality of the final data volume for any type of survey. The design service is individually tailored to your requirements and needs, but often follows the three phases outlined in these pages.

Phase One: Feasibility Study

A feasibility study is usually the first step for difficult surveys such as those with extreme access or other operational problems, surveys in relatively unknown areas, and 4D surveys. The main technical and operational aspects are examined, together with risks and costs. The feasibility study will typically include:

• Analysis of 2D seismic and borehole data to identify the main factors controlling data quality.
• Examination of operational factors such as currents, bathymetry, surface topography and obstructions.
• Review of factors affecting survey timing (weather, currents, nearby seismic or drilling operations, environmental regulations, etc.).
• Identification of potential problem areas, with appropriate acquisition and processing solutions.
• Specifications for field trials, if these are necessary to resolve any outstanding technical issues. 
• Provisional template designs with cost/benefit analysis and schedules.
• Presentation of preliminary survey design to management and partners.
